What is NIST’s role in eliminating mercury in metrology instrumentation? Currently, mercury liquid-in-glass thermometers are rapidly being replaced by alternative technologies. Mercury is currently used in mercury manometers for pressure metrology, and in mercury triple point cells for temperature metrology scale realizations. This talk will give a brief overview of these measurements and the replacement technologies currently under development. The talk will also briefly cover the status of ASTM standards and the Minamata Convention in relation to the goal of elimination of mercury from measurement standards.
